mata ortiz pottery
Mata Ortiz is located in a very rural area of Chihuahua, Mexico about 2 hours from the Arizona, New Mexcio border. The pottery was a way of life preColumbian times but was lost until recently when an anthrolopolgist by the name of Spencer MacCallum found 3 pots in a thrift store in Deming, New Mexico. He became so intriqued with this work that he found the original artist, Juan Quezada and spent 40 years promoting his work to the art world. Now Mata Ortiz has over 400 artists that make a living of making these fine pieces of ceramic art. World collectors and musuemns travel to the village to purchase pots from the artists. Here is youtube video on Juan's younger sister, Lydia. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPcLMC
I presently have a gallery of 100 selected Mata Ortiz pottery pieces. I have originals of the master artist, Juan Quezada. His brothers, Nicolas and Reynaldo plus Pilo Mora and several pieces of Macario Ortiz.
